"Voice" by Angela Sharma ('19)

Come closer.
This won't last long.
Try to listen to nothing
but the sound of my voice.
You can hear it, can't you?
Good.

I do this to people.
I mess with their minds.
I can make beautiful things happen, I can,

but those who witness them pay with tears.
Or more.
Simple.

The other day, I was at the 5th Avenue subway station.
I made the man with the violin play Canon in D,
and then I waited.
                 ..
                 ...
*Let's see ... That lady there? Perfect.*
                 ...
                  ..
                   .
The music mesmerized her.
I saw the first signs of imminent tears in her eyes.
Perfect.

"Choose a moment … Walk up to the yellow line … The train is almost here …”

I am that voice.
I do this to people.
I mess with their minds.
I make heights, fast cars and trains, fire, darkness—

I make all of those irresistible.

And more.

But before people give in to my powers,

I make beautiful things happen,

so that the last thing they see

is beauty.

Haunting music. Tempting art.

Hypnotic words.

I am that voice.
You know me.
Come closer.
This won't last long.
(Shhh ... Try to calm that pounding heart of yours.)
Try to listen to nothing
but the sound of my voice.
You can hear it now
even more clearly,
can't you?
Good.

Turn back when you're ready.
I'll show you something beautiful …
